Clinical Science Poster Prize winner

Alfred Williams
Alfred Williams graduated from The University of Hull in July 2009, with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science. The degree programme covered four biomedical science disciplines: Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Medical Microbiology.
During his final year, he selected Cellular Pathology and Medical Microbiology as his two focused study options, in conjunction with an experimental research project, investigating cardioprotection through overexpression of naturetic peptides with Professor Thomas Walther from the Hull York Medical School.
He is now undertaking a Masters of Research degree in Cardiovascular Science at The University of Manchester, under the supervision of Dr Yvonne Alexander (PhD) investigating the role of RANKL/OPG signalling in medial arterial calcification in diabetic patients and those with the added complication of Charcot neuroathropathy. Access to adequate patient numbers and support for patient recruitment came from his clinical supervisor Dr Agbor Ndip (MD). His research was carried out in The Core Technology Facility, located within the hub of The University of Manchester’s biomedical community, providing an excellent environment for researchers and students alike with access to a range of state-of-the-art facilities. His career has benefited from the multi-disciplinary and translational approach to research and development of clinical and life sciences.
